Our story
Built by practitioners, for practitioners.
CarinAI was founded after watching too many organisations deploy AI systems without any governance scaffolding — and then scramble when things went wrong. We saw the same story play out again and again: capable teams, good intentions, and no framework to catch the gaps.
We built CarinAI to change that. Our team brings together expertise in AI policy, enterprise risk management, and public sector governance to deliver frameworks that are practical, audit-ready, and genuinely embedded — not just filed away.
The name comes from Carina — the keel of the great ship Argo, a constellation of the southern sky. A keel doesn't steer the ship, but without it nothing holds together. That's what governance does for AI.
Carina
The Keel · Southern Sky
The name behind the mark
A constellation built for navigation.
Every element of the CarinAI identity is drawn from one of the most storied constellations in the southern sky.
The Keel
Carina is Latin for keel— the structural spine of a ship. Carved from the ancient Argo Navis constellation in 1763 by astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille, it represents the part of Jason's mythic vessel that held everything together beneath the waterline. Invisible, foundational, essential.
Canopus
Alpha Carinae — Canopus — is the second-brightest star in the night sky. For centuries it served as a navigational fixed point for sailors in the southern hemisphere. NASA still uses it today to orient spacecraft. It stands for precision, reliability, and the ability to keep complex systems on course.
The Diamond Cross
Four stars within Carina — Beta, Theta, Upsilon, and Omega Carinae — form the Diamond Cross asterism, visible only from the southern hemisphere. Clean, geometric, and unmistakable. It is the visual foundation of the CarinAI mark: four points of reference that define a clear boundary.
The Carina Nebula
NGC 3372 — the Carina Nebula — is one of the largest star-forming regions visible to the naked eye, spanning more than 300 light-years. It is a place of emergence: structured complexity giving rise to new forms. We see the same potential in organisations that approach AI governance not as a constraint, but as a creative act.
Southern Sky
Carina is visible only from the southern hemisphere — it belongs to our sky. The CarinAI identity is unapologetically Australian: built for the regulatory environment, the market conditions, and the organisations operating here. We are not a northern-hemisphere framework translated for local use. We are built from the ground up.
Argo Navis
The original constellation — the great ship of the Argonauts — was once one of the largest in the sky. Lacaille divided it into three: Carina (the keel), Puppis (the stern), and Vela (the sails). We took the keel. Without it, the rest is just timber and wind. Governance is what makes capability coherent.
“A keel doesn't steer the ship. But without it, nothing holds together.”
The CarinAI principle
Our approach
Three principles that guide every engagement we take on.
Practical over theoretical
We build governance frameworks that your teams will actually use — grounded in your existing processes, not academic ideals.
Regulation-ready
We track APS AI Policy, the EU AI Act, and ISO 42001 so you don't have to. Every framework we build is designed to flex as the rules evolve.
Embedded, not parachuted
We work alongside your people as a genuine governance partner — not a consultancy that disappears after the final report.
What we stand for
The values that shape every conversation, proposal, and deliverable we produce.
Integrity
We give you our honest assessment — even when it's not what you want to hear. Our recommendations are always in your organisation's long-term interest.
Rigour
We apply the same standards to your AI governance that regulators will. Every framework we build is evidence-based and audit-ready.
Partnership
We measure our success by yours. We're not done when the engagement ends — we're done when your governance capability is genuinely embedded.
